56 - Listen to Recitation of this Surah with Translation

Ayah: 1
Arabic: يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ
Pickthal: O thou enveloped in thy cloak,
Shakir: O you who are clothed!
Yusuf Ali: O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)!

Ayah: 2
Arabic: قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ
Pickthal: Arise and warn!
Shakir: Arise and warn,
Yusuf Ali: Arise and deliver thy warning!

Ayah: 3
Arabic: وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ
Pickthal: Thy Lord magnify,
Shakir: And your Lord do magnify,
Yusuf Ali: And thy Lord do thou magnify!

Ayah: 4
Arabic: وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ
Pickthal: Thy raiment purify,
Shakir: And your garments do purify,
Yusuf Ali: And thy garments keep free from stain!

Ayah: 5
Arabic: وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ
Pickthal: Pollution shun!
Shakir: And uncleanness do shun,
Yusuf Ali: And all abomination shun!

Ayah: 6
Arabic: وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ
Pickthal: And show not favour, seeking wordly gain!
Shakir: And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase,
Yusuf Ali: Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)!

Ayah: 7
Arabic: وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ
Pickthal: For the sake of thy Lord, be patient!
Shakir: And for the sake of your Lord, be patient.
Yusuf Ali: But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant!

Ayah: 8
Arabic: فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النَّاقُورِ
Pickthal: For when the trumpet shall sound,
Shakir: For when the trumpet is sounded,
Yusuf Ali: Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded,

Ayah: 9
Arabic: فَذَلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ
Pickthal: Surely that day will be a day of anguish,
Shakir: That, at that time, shall be a difficult day,
Yusuf Ali: That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,-

Ayah: 10
Arabic: عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ
Pickthal: Not of ease, for disbelievers.
Shakir: For the unbelievers, anything but easy.
Yusuf Ali: Far from easy for those without Faith.

Ayah: 11
Arabic: ذَرْنِي وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا
Pickthal: Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely,
Shakir: Leave Me and him whom I created alone,
Yusuf Ali: Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!-

Ayah: 12
Arabic: وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا
Pickthal: And then bestowed upon him ample means,
Shakir: And give him vast riches,
Yusuf Ali: To whom I granted resources in abundance,

Ayah: 13
Arabic: وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا
Pickthal: And sons abiding in his presence
Shakir: And sons dwelling in his presence,
Yusuf Ali: And sons to be by his side!-

Ayah: 14
Arabic: وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُ تَمْهِيدًا
Pickthal: And made (life) smooth for him.
Shakir: And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably;
Yusuf Ali: To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable!

Ayah: 15
Arabic: ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ
Pickthal: Yet he desireth that I should give more.
Shakir: And yet he desires that I should add more!
Yusuf Ali: Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);-

Ayah: 16
Arabic: كَلَّا إِنَّهُ كَانَ لِآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا
Pickthal: Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations.
Shakir: By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications.
Yusuf Ali: By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory!

Ayah: 17
Arabic: سَأُرْهِقُهُ صَعُودًا
Pickthal: On him I shall impose a fearful doom.
Shakir: I will make a distressing punishment overtake him.
Yusuf Ali: Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities!

Ayah: 18
Arabic: إِنَّهُ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
Pickthal: For lo! he did consider; then he planned -
Shakir: Surely he reflected and guessed,
Yusuf Ali: For he thought and he plotted;-

Ayah: 19
Arabic: فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
Pickthal: (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned!
Shakir: But may he be cursed how he plotted;
Yusuf Ali: And woe to him! How he plotted!-

Ayah: 20
Arabic: ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
Pickthal: Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! -
Shakir: Again, may he be cursed how he plotted;
Yusuf Ali: Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!-

Ayah: 21
Arabic: ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
Pickthal: Then looked he,
Shakir: Then he looked,
Yusuf Ali: Then he looked round;

Ayah: 22
Arabic: ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
Pickthal: Then frowned he and showed displeasure.
Shakir: Then he frowned and scowled,
Yusuf Ali: Then he frowned and he scowled;

Ayah: 23
Arabic: ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ
Pickthal: Then turned he away in pride
Shakir: Then he turned back and was big with pride,
Yusuf Ali: Then he turned back and was haughty;

Ayah: 24
Arabic: فَقَالَ إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ
Pickthal: And said: This is naught else than magic from of old;
Shakir: ~Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others);
Yusuf Ali: Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old;

Ayah: 25
Arabic: إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ
Pickthal: This is naught else than speech of mortal man.
Shakir: This is naught but the word of a mortal.
Yusuf Ali: "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!"

Ayah: 26
Arabic: سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ
Pickthal: Him shall I fling unto the burning.
Shakir: I will cast him into hell.
Yusuf Ali: Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire!

Ayah: 27
Arabic: وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَرُ
Pickthal: - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! -
Shakir: And what will make you realize what hell is?
Yusuf Ali: And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is?

Ayah: 28
Arabic: لَا تُبْقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ
Pickthal: It leaveth naught; it spareth naught
Shakir: It leaves naught nor does it spare aught.
Yusuf Ali: Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!-

Ayah: 29
Arabic: لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ
Pickthal: It shrivelleth the man.
Shakir: It scorches the mortal.
Yusuf Ali: Darkening and changing the colour of man!

Ayah: 30
Arabic: عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ
Pickthal: Above it are nineteen.
Shakir: Over it are nineteen.
Yusuf Ali: Over it are Nineteen.

Ayah: 31
Arabic: وَمَا جَعَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ النَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَائِكَةً وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِيمَانًا وَلَا يَرْتَابَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَالْكَافِرُونَ مَاذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِهَذَا مَثَلًا كَذَلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ مَن يَشَاء وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاء وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَى لِلْبَشَرِ
Pickthal: We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve;that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, andthat believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripturehath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose heartsthere is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by thissimilitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will Heguideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught elsethan a Reminder unto mortals.
Shakir: And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals.
Yusuf Ali: And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order thatthe People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers mayincrease in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of theBook and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease andthe Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus dothAllah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and nonecan know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than awarning to mankind.

Ayah: 32
Arabic: كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِ
Pickthal: Nay, by the Moon
Shakir: Nay; I swear by the moon,
Yusuf Ali: Nay, verily: By the Moon,

Ayah: 33
Arabic: وَاللَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ
Pickthal: And the night when it withdraweth
Shakir: And the night when it departs,
Yusuf Ali: And by the Night as it retreateth,

Ayah: 34
Arabic: وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا أَسْفَرَ
Pickthal: And the dawn when it shineth forth,
Shakir: And the daybreak when it shines;
Yusuf Ali: And by the Dawn as it shineth forth,-

Ayah: 35
Arabic: إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى الْكُبَرِ
Pickthal: Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents)
Shakir: Surely it (hell) is one of the gravest (misfortunes),
Yusuf Ali: This is but one of the mighty (portents),

Ayah: 36
Arabic: نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ
Pickthal: As a warning unto men,
Shakir: A warning to mortals,
Yusuf Ali: A warning to mankind,-

Ayah: 37
Arabic: لِمَن شَاء مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ
Pickthal: Unto him of you who will advance or hang back.
Shakir: To him among you who wishes to go forward or remain behind.
Yusuf Ali: To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;-

Ayah: 38
Arabic: كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ
Pickthal: Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds;
Shakir: Every soul is held in pledge for what it earns,
Yusuf Ali: Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds.

Ayah: 39
Arabic: إِلَّا أَصْحَابَ الْيَمِينِ
Pickthal: Save those who will stand on the right hand.
Shakir: Except the people of the right hand,
Yusuf Ali: Except the Companions of the Right Hand.

Ayah: 40
Arabic: فِي جَنَّاتٍ يَتَسَاءلُونَ
Pickthal: In gardens they will ask one another
Shakir: In gardens, they shall ask each other
Yusuf Ali: (They will be) in Gardens (of Delight): they will question each other,

Ayah: 41
Arabic: عَنِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ
Pickthal: Concerning the guilty:
Shakir: About the guilty:
Yusuf Ali: And (ask) of the Sinners:

Ayah: 42
Arabic: مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ
Pickthal: What hath brought you to this burning?
Shakir: What has brought you into hell?
Yusuf Ali: "What led you into Hell Fire?"

Ayah: 43
Arabic: قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ
Pickthal: They will answer: We were not of those who prayed
Shakir: They shall say: We were not of those who prayed;
Yusuf Ali: They will say: "We were not of those who prayed;

Ayah: 44
Arabic: وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِينَ
Pickthal: Nor did we feed the wretched.
Shakir: And we used not to feed the poor;
Yusuf Ali: "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent;

Ayah: 45
Arabic: وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَائِضِينَ
Pickthal: We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders,
Shakir: And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who entered into vain discourses.
Yusuf Ali: "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers;

Ayah: 46
Arabic: وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ
Pickthal: And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,
Shakir: And we used to call the day of judgment a lie;
Yusuf Ali: "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,

Ayah: 47
Arabic: حَتَّى أَتَانَا الْيَقِينُ
Pickthal: Till the Inevitable came unto us.
Shakir: Till death overtook us.
Yusuf Ali: "Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain."

Ayah: 48
Arabic: فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشَّافِعِينَ
Pickthal: The mediation of no mediators will avail them then.
Shakir: So the intercession of intercessors shall not avail them.
Yusuf Ali: Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them.

Ayah: 49
Arabic: فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ
Pickthal: Why now turn they away from the Admonishment,
Shakir: What is then the matter with them, that they turn away from the admonition
Yusuf Ali: Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?-

Ayah: 50
Arabic: كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ
Pickthal: As they were frightened asses
Shakir: As if they were asses taking fright
Yusuf Ali: As if they were affrighted asses,

Ayah: 51
Arabic: فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍ
Pickthal: Fleeing from a lion?
Shakir: That had fled from a lion?
Yusuf Ali: Fleeing from a lion!

Ayah: 52
Arabic: بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَى صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً
Pickthal: Nay, but everyone of them desireth that he should be given open pages (from Allah).
Shakir: Nay; every one of them desires that he may be given pages spread out;
Yusuf Ali: Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out!

Ayah: 53
Arabic: كَلَّا بَل لَا يَخَافُونَ الْآخِرَةَ
Pickthal: Nay, verily. They fear not the Hereafter.
Shakir: Nay! but they do not fear the hereafter.
Yusuf Ali: By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter,

Ayah: 54
Arabic: كَلَّا إِنَّهُ تَذْكِرَةٌ
Pickthal: Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment.
Shakir: Nay! it is surely an admonition.
Yusuf Ali: Nay, this surely is an admonition:

Ayah: 55
Arabic: فَمَن شَاء ذَكَرَهُ
Pickthal: So whosoever will may heed.
Shakir: So whoever pleases may mind it.
Yusuf Ali: Let any who will, keep it in remembrance!

Ayah: 56
Arabic: وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاء اللَّهُ هُوَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوَى وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ
Pickthal: And they will not heed unless Allah willeth (it). He is the fount of fear. He is the fount of Mercy.
Shakir: And they will not mind unless Allah please. He is worthy to be feared and worthy to forgive.
Yusuf Ali: But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness.
