Pickthal: |
And (remember) when We did deliver you from Pharaoh's folk, who were afflicting you with dreadful torment, slaying your sons andsparing your women: that was a tremendous trial from your Lord. |
Shakir: |
And when We delivered you from Firon's people, who subjected you to severe torment, killing your sons and sparing your women, and in this there was a great trial from your Lord. |
Yusuf Ali: |
And remember, We delivered you from the people of Pharaoh: They set you hard tasks and punishments, slaughtered your sons and let yourwomen-folk live; therein was a tremendous trial from your Lord. |

And when We brought you through the sea and rescued you, and drowned the folk of Pharaoh in your sight. |

And when We parted the sea for you, so We saved you and drowned the followers of Firon and you watched by. |

And remember We divided the sea for you and saved you and drowned Pharaoh's people within your very sight. |

Like Pharaoh's folk and those who were before them, they disbelieved Our revelations and so Allah seized them for their sins. AndAllah is severe in punishment. |
Shakir: |
Like the striving of the people of Firon and those before them; they rejected Our communications, so Allah destroyedthem on account of their faults; and Allah is severe in requiting(evil). |
Yusuf Ali: |
(Their plight will be) no better than that of the people of Pharaoh, and their predecessors: They denied our Signs, and Allah called themto account for their sins. For Allah is strict in punishment. |

Then we raised after them Musa with Our communications to Firon and his chiefs, but they disbelieved in them; consider then what was the end of the mischief makers. |
Yusuf Ali: |
Then after them We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they wrongfully rejected them: So see what was the end ofthose who made mischief. |

Said the Chiefs of the people of Pharaoh: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed. |

And the wizards came to Pharaoh, saying: Surely there will be a reward for us if we are victors. |

And the enchanters came to Firon (and) said: We must surely have a reward if we are the prevailing ones. |

So there came the sorcerers to Pharaoh: They said, "of course we shall have a (suitable) reward if we win!" |

Firon said: Do you believe in Him before I have given you permission? Surely this is a plot which you have secretlydevised in this city, that you may turn out of it its people, butyou shall know: |
Yusuf Ali: |
Said Pharaoh: "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? Surely this is a trick which ye have planned in the city to drive out itspeople: but soon shall ye know (the consequences). |

The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said: (O King), wilt thou suffer Moses and his people to make mischief in the land, and flout theeand thy gods? He said: We will slay their sons and spare their women, forlo! we are in power over them. |
Shakir: |
And the chiefs of Firon's people said: Do you leave Musa and his people to make mischief in the land and to forsakeyou and your gods? He said: We will slay their sons and sparetheir women, and surely we are masters over them. |
Yusuf Ali: |
Said the chiefs of Pharaoh's people: "Wilt thou leave Moses and his people, to spread mischief in the land, and to abandon thee and thygods?" He said: "Their male children will we slay; (only) their femaleswill we save alive; and we have over them (power) irresistible." |

And we straitened Pharaoh's folk with famine and dearth of fruits, that peradventure they might heed. |
Shakir: |
And certainly We overtook Firon's people with droughts and diminution of fruits that they may be mindful. |
Yusuf Ali: |
We punished the people of Pharaoh with years (of droughts) and shortness of crops; that they might receive admonition. |
