In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

Arabic: |
وَالسَّمَاء
وَالطَّارِقِ
|
Pickthal: |
By the heaven and the Morning Star |
Shakir: |
I swear by the heaven and the comer by night; |
Yusuf Ali: |
By the Sky and the Night-Visitant (therein);- |
Ayah: 2 |
|
Arabic: |
وَمَا
أَدْرَاكَ
مَا
الطَّارِقُ
|
Pickthal: |
- Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is! |
Shakir: |
And what will make you know what the comer by night is? |
Yusuf Ali: |
And what will explain to thee what the Night-Visitant is?- |
Ayah: 3 |
|
Arabic: |
النَّجْمُ
الثَّاقِبُ
|
Pickthal: |
- The piercing Star! |
Shakir: |
The star of piercing brightness; |
Yusuf Ali: |
(It is) the Star of piercing brightness;- |
Ayah: 4 |
|
Arabic: |
إِن
كُلُّ
نَفْسٍ
لَّمَّا
عَلَيْهَا
حَافِظٌ
|
Pickthal: |
No human soul but hath a guardian over it. |
Shakir: |
There is not a soul but over it is a keeper. |
Yusuf Ali: |
There is no soul but has a protector over it. |
Ayah: 5 |
|
Arabic: |
فَلْيَنظُرِ
الْإِنسَانُ
مِمَّ
خُلِقَ
|
Pickthal: |
So let man consider from what he is created. |
Shakir: |
So let man consider of what he is created: |
Yusuf Ali: |
Now let man but think from what he is created! |
Ayah: 6 |

Arabic: |
خُلِقَ
مِن مَّاء
دَافِقٍ
|
Pickthal: |
He is created from a gushing fluid |
Shakir: |
He is created of water pouring forth, |
Yusuf Ali: |
He is created from a drop emitted- |
Ayah: 7 |

Arabic: |
يَخْرُجُ
مِن بَيْنِ
الصُّلْبِ
وَالتَّرَائِبِ
|
Pickthal: |
That issued from between the loins and ribs. |
Shakir: |
Coming from between the back and the ribs. |
Yusuf Ali: |
Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs: |
Ayah: 8 |
|
Arabic: |
إِنَّهُ
عَلَى
رَجْعِهِ
لَقَادِرٌ
|
Pickthal: |
Lo! He verily is Able to return him (unto life) |
Shakir: |
Most surely He is able to return him (to life). |
Yusuf Ali: |
Surely (Allah) is able to bring him back (to life)! |
Ayah: 9 |

Arabic: |
يَوْمَ
تُبْلَى
السَّرَائِرُ
|
Pickthal: |
On the day when hidden thoughts shall be searched out. |
Shakir: |
On the day when hidden things shall be made manifest, |
Yusuf Ali: |
The Day that (all) things secret will be tested, |
Ayah: 10 |
|
Arabic: |
فَمَا
لَهُ مِن
قُوَّةٍ
وَلَا
نَاصِرٍ
|
Pickthal: |
Then will he have no might nor any helper. |
Shakir: |
He shall have neither strength nor helper. |
Yusuf Ali: |
(Man) will have no power, and no helper. |
Ayah: 11 |

Arabic: |
وَالسَّمَاء
ذَاتِ
الرَّجْعِ
|
Pickthal: |
By the heaven which giveth the returning rain, |
Shakir: |
I swear by the raingiving heavens, |
Yusuf Ali: |
By the Firmament which returns (in its round), |
Ayah: 12 |
|
Arabic: |
وَالْأَرْضِ
ذَاتِ
الصَّدْعِ
|
Pickthal: |
And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants) |
Shakir: |
And the earth splitting (with plants); |
Yusuf Ali: |
And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation),- |
Ayah: 13 |
|
Arabic: |
إِنَّهُ
لَقَوْلٌ
فَصْلٌ
|
Pickthal: |
Lo! this (Qur'an) is a conclusive word, |
Shakir: |
Most surely it is a decisive word, |
Yusuf Ali: |
Behold this is the Word that distinguishes (Good from Evil): |
Ayah: 14 |
|
Arabic: |
وَمَا
هُوَ
بِالْهَزْلِ
|
Pickthal: |
It is no pleasantry. |
Shakir: |
And it is no joke. |
Yusuf Ali: |
It is not a thing for amusement. |
Ayah: 15 |
|
Arabic: |
إِنَّهُمْ
يَكِيدُونَ
كَيْدًا
|
Pickthal: |
Lo! they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad) |
Shakir: |
Surely they will make a scheme, |
Yusuf Ali: |
As for them, they are but plotting a scheme, |
Ayah: 16 |
|
Arabic: |
وَأَكِيدُ
كَيْدًا
|
Pickthal: |
And I plot a plot (against them). |
Shakir: |
And I (too) will make a scheme. |
Yusuf Ali: |
And I am planning a scheme. |
Ayah: 17 |
|
Arabic: |
فَمَهِّلِ
الْكَافِرِينَ
أَمْهِلْهُمْ
رُوَيْدًا
|
Pickthal: |
So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while. |
Shakir: |
So grant the unbelievers a respite: let them alone for a |
Yusuf Ali: |
Therefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers: Give respite to them gently (for awhile). |
