Surah Al-Maarij (the ascending stairways)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Total Verses : 44 - Listen to Recitation of this Surah with Translation

Ayah: 1
Arabic:	سَأَلَ سَائِلٌ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ
Yusuf Ali:	A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall-

Ayah: 2
Arabic:	لِّلْكَافِرينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٌ
Yusuf Ali:	The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,-

Ayah: 3
Arabic:	مِّنَ اللَّهِ ذِي الْمَعَارِجِ
Yusuf Ali:	(A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent.

Ayah: 4
Arabic:	تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ
Yusuf Ali:	The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years:

Ayah: 5
Arabic:	فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا
Yusuf Ali:	Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment).

Ayah: 6
Arabic:	إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُ بَعِيدًا
Yusuf Ali:	They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event):

Ayah: 7
Arabic:	وَنَرَاهُ قَرِيبًا
Yusuf Ali:	But We see it (quite) near.

Ayah: 8
Arabic:	يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاء كَالْمُهْلِ
Yusuf Ali:	The Day that the sky will be like molten brass,

Ayah: 9
Arabic:	وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ
Yusuf Ali:	And the mountains will be like wool,

Ayah: 10
Arabic:	وَلَا يَسْأَلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا
Yusuf Ali:	And no friend will ask after a friend,

Ayah: 11
Arabic:	يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ
Yusuf Ali:	Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of thatDay by (sacrificing) his children,

Ayah: 12
Arabic:	وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ
Yusuf Ali:	His wife and his brother,

Ayah: 13
Arabic:	وَفَصِيلَتِهِ الَّتِي تُؤْويهِ
Yusuf Ali:	His kindred who sheltered him,

Ayah: 14
Arabic:	وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
Yusuf Ali:	And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him:

Ayah: 15
Arabic:	كَلَّا إِنَّهَا لَظَى
Yusuf Ali:	By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!-

Ayah: 16
Arabic:	نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَى
Yusuf Ali:	Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!-

Ayah: 17
Arabic:	تَدْعُو مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّى
Yusuf Ali:	Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right).

Ayah: 18
Arabic:	وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَى
Yusuf Ali:	And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)!

Ayah: 19
Arabic:	إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا
Yusuf Ali:	Truly man was created very impatient;-

Ayah: 20
Arabic:	إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا
Yusuf Ali:	Fretful when evil touches him;

Ayah: 21
Arabic:	وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا
Yusuf Ali:	And niggardly when good reaches him;-

Ayah: 22
Arabic:	إِلَّا الْمُصَلِّينَ
Yusuf Ali:	Not so those devoted to Prayer;-

Ayah: 23
Arabic:	الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَى صَلَاتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Those who remain steadfast to their prayer;

Ayah: 24
Arabic:	وَالَّذِينَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ
Yusuf Ali:	And those in whose wealth is a recognised right.

Ayah: 25
Arabic:	لِّلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ
Yusuf Ali:	For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking);

Ayah: 26
Arabic:	وَالَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ
Yusuf Ali:	And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment;

Ayah: 27
Arabic:	وَالَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,-

Ayah: 28
Arabic:	إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ
Yusuf Ali:	For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;-

Ayah: 29
Arabic:	وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	And those who guard their chastity,

Ayah: 30
Arabic:	إِلَّا عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed,

Ayah: 31
Arabic:	فَمَنِ ابْتَغَى وَرَاء ذَلِكَ فَأُوْلَئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;-

Ayah: 32
Arabic:	وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	And those who respect their trusts and covenants;

Ayah: 33
Arabic:	وَالَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْ قَائِمُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	And those who stand firm in their testimonies;

Ayah: 34
Arabic:	وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَى صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;-

Ayah: 35
Arabic:	أُوْلَئِكَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss).

Ayah: 36
Arabic:	فَمَالِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	Now what is the matter with the Unbelievers that they rush madly before thee-

Ayah: 37
Arabic:	عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	From the right and from the left, in crowds?

Ayah: 38
Arabic:	أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ
Yusuf Ali:	Does every man of them long to enter the Garden of Bliss?

Ayah: 39
Arabic:	كَلَّا إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	By no means! For We have created them out of the (base matter) they know!

Ayah: 40
Arabic:	فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشَارِقِ وَالْمَغَارِبِ إِنَّا لَقَادِرُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Now I do call to witness the Lord of all points in the East and the West that We can certainly-

Ayah: 41
Arabic:	عَلَى أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	Substitute for them better (men) than they; And We are not to be defeated (in Our Plan).

Ayah: 42
Arabic:	فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتَّى يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	So leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they encounter that Day of theirs which they have been promised!-

Ayah: 43
Arabic:	يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَى نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	The Day whereon they will issue from their sepulchres in sudden haste as if they were rushing to a goal-post (fixed for them),-

Ayah: 44
Arabic:	خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Their eyes lowered in dejection,- ignominy covering them (all over)! such is the Day the which they are promised!
