Surah Al-Qalam (the pen)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Total Verses : 52 - Listen to Recitation of this Surah with Translation

Ayah: 1
Arabic:	ن وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,-

Ayah: 2
Arabic:	مَا أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ
Yusuf Ali:	Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed.

Ayah: 3
Arabic:	وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ
Yusuf Ali:	Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing:

Ayah: 4
Arabic:	وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلى خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
Yusuf Ali:	And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character.

Ayah: 5
Arabic:	فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Soon wilt thou see, and they will see,

Ayah: 6
Arabic:	بِأَييِّكُمُ الْمَفْتُونُ
Yusuf Ali:	Which of you is afflicted with madness.

Ayah: 7
Arabic:	إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true)Guidance.

Ayah: 8
Arabic:	فَلَا تُطِعِ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth).

Ayah: 9
Arabic:	وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant.

Ayah: 10
Arabic:	وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِينٍ
Yusuf Ali:	Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths,

Ayah: 11
Arabic:	هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّاء بِنَمِيمٍ
Yusuf Ali:	A slanderer, going about with calumnies,

Ayah: 12
Arabic:	مَنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
Yusuf Ali:	(Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds, deep in sin,

Ayah: 13
Arabic:	عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ زَنِيمٍ
Yusuf Ali:	Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,-

Ayah: 14
Arabic:	أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons.

Ayah: 15
Arabic:	إِذَا تُتْلَى عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries!

Ayah: 16
Arabic:	سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى الْخُرْطُومِ
Yusuf Ali:	Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout!

Ayah: 17
Arabic:	إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in themorning.

Ayah: 18
Arabic:	وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will").

Ayah: 19
Arabic:	فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَائِفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep.

Ayah: 20
Arabic:	فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيمِ
Yusuf Ali:	So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered).

Ayah: 21
Arabic:	فَتَنَادَوا مُصْبِحِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,-

Ayah: 22
Arabic:	أَنِ اغْدُوا عَلَى حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَارِمِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	"Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in the morning, if ye would gather the fruits."

Ayah: 23
Arabic:	فَانطَلَقُوا وَهُمْ يَتَخَافَتُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)-

Ayah: 24
Arabic:	أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم مِّسْكِينٌ
Yusuf Ali:	"Let not a single indigent person break in upon you into the (garden) this day."

Ayah: 25
Arabic:	وَغَدَوْا عَلَى حَرْدٍ قَادِرِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve.

Ayah: 26
Arabic:	فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوا إِنَّا لَضَالُّونَ
Yusuf Ali:	But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way:

Ayah: 27
Arabic:	بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	"Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour)!"

Ayah: 28
Arabic:	قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'"

Ayah: 29
Arabic:	قَالُوا سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	They said: "Glory to our Lord! Verily we have been doing wrong!"

Ayah: 30
Arabic:	فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ يَتَلَاوَمُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Then they turned, one against another, in reproach.

Ayah: 31
Arabic:	قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا طَاغِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed!

Ayah: 32
Arabic:	عَسَى رَبُّنَا أَن يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهَا إِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا رَاغِبُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	"It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!"

Ayah: 33
Arabic:	كَذَلِكَ الْعَذَابُ وَلَعَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew!

Ayah: 34
Arabic:	إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ
Yusuf Ali:	Verily, for the Righteous, are Gardens of Delight, in the Presence of their Lord.

Ayah: 35
Arabic:	أَفَنَجْعَلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَالْمُجْرِمِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	Shall We then treat the People of Faith like the People of Sin?

Ayah: 36
Arabic:	مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	What is the matter with you? How judge ye?

Ayah: 37
Arabic:	أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَابٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Or have ye a book through which ye learn-

Ayah: 38
Arabic:	إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	That ye shall have, through it whatever ye choose?

Ayah: 39
Arabic:	أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَانٌ عَلَيْنَا بَالِغَةٌ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Or have ye Covenants with Us to oath, reaching to the Day of Judgment, (providing) that ye shall have whatever ye shall demand?

Ayah: 40
Arabic:	سَلْهُم أَيُّهُم بِذَلِكَ زَعِيمٌ
Yusuf Ali:	Ask thou of them, which of them will stand surety for that!

Ayah: 41
Arabic:	أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاء فَلْيَأْتُوا بِشُرَكَائِهِمْ إِن كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	Or have they some "Partners" (in Allahhead)? Then let them produce their "partners", if they are truthful!

Ayah: 42
Arabic:	يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	The Day that the shin shall be laid bare, and they shall be summoned to bow in adoration, but they shall not be able,-

Ayah: 43
Arabic:	خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ وَقَدْ كَانُوا يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَالِمُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Their eyes will be cast down,- ignominy will cover them; seeing that they had been summoned aforetime to bow in adoration, whilethey were whole, (and had refused).

Ayah: 44
Arabic:	فَذَرْنِي وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Then leave Me alone with such as reject this Message: by degrees shall We punish them from directions they perceive not.

Ayah: 45
Arabic:	وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ
Yusuf Ali:	A (long) respite will I grant them: truly powerful is My Plan.

Ayah: 46
Arabic:	أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍ مُّثْقَلُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Or is it that thou dost ask them for a reward, so that they are burdened with a load of debt?-

Ayah: 47
Arabic:	أَمْ عِندَهُمُ الْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ
Yusuf Ali:	Or that the Unseen is in their hands, so that they can write it down?

Ayah: 48
Arabic:	فَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ الْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَى وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ
Yusuf Ali:	So wait with patience for the Command of thy Lord, and be not like the Companion of the Fish,- when he cried out in agony.

Ayah: 49
Arabic:	لَوْلَا أَن تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاء وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ
Yusuf Ali:	Had not Grace from his Lord reached him, he would indeed have been cast off on the naked shore, in disgrace.

Ayah: 50
Arabic:	فَاجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	Thus did his Lord choose him and make him of the Company of the Righteous.

Ayah: 51
Arabic:	وَإِن يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ
Yusuf Ali:	And the Unbelievers would almost trip thee up with their eyes when they hear the Message; and they say: "Surely he is possessed!"

Ayah: 52
Arabic:	وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ
Yusuf Ali:	But it is nothing less than a Message to all the worlds.
